Kelly D. Benavides was born and raised in Baytown, Texas. She went on to study at Univeristy of Houston where she received a Bachelors of Science degree in Behavioral Science in 1993. She then decided to pursue a law degree at Thurgood Marshall School of Law and received a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1996.
After law school, she was employed by the City of Houston as an Assistant City Attorney in the criminal law division until 2002 when she decided to open the Benavides & McLellan Law Firm, practicing in criminal defense and traffic ticket defense. In 2003, she was appointed to serve as an Associate Municipal Judge for the City of Baytown and continues to serve in that capacity. In 2006, she was also appointed to serve as an Associate Municipal Judge in the City of Spring Valley where she continues to serve. In 2012, she formed The Benavides Law Firm and continues to practice law as a criminal defense attorney.
She has been asked to speak and teach at various legal organization functions including the Harris County Municipal Justice Bar Association and serves on the Legislative Committee of the Municipal Judges section for the State Bar of Texas. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
